Meet the maker
greg’s story
It all began in Brockley, London 2009 when I quit my job to freelance in commercial interior architecture. To support the anticipated troughs in work, I decided to design and build bespoke furniture, hopefully finally putting my furniture design degree to some use. My brief for design was simple - Inspired by working with my Dad (a builder) throughout my childhood I wanted to see if I could only use unloved (yet affordable) construction grade 4”x 2” solid timber sourced locally. Working to these dimensions meant I would only need the simplest of hand tools (also affordable) - a chop saw, sanders, hand drill and a load of clamps. With that I went to work in my back garden, selling a few and then deciding to take the leap and rent workshop space locally. The business ran successfully for 3 years, however juggling this with the freelance work became difficult to manage, so I decided to pause until I could afford to build and invest properly in the business.
Fast forward 12 years having honed my design skills in a large commercial architectural practice, I feel it’s the right time to return to my passion as a designer maker. My design constraints are far boarder this time round, I want to experiment more with materials (timber, concrete and steel) however sustainability and the re-using and upcycling of materials is very important.
sustainability
The entire first batch of the totem’s top oak components were once part of the sofa I built and sat on since 2017, however the quality of the oak only improving with age.
The totems (and furniture in general) are and will continue to be made as sustainably as possible and I love the idea these items once started life as something completely different, like an unloved palette destined for the tip.
